State Treasurer Clint Zweifel delivered positive news Feb. 8 for those saving for college.

Missouri’s college savings plan, MOST 529 Plan, is now the fifth cheapest plan in the nation.

“This is the largest cost reduction in history and guarantees every single Missourian substantial savings with this elite plan,” Zweifel said during a Feb. 8 press conference at University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). “College saving is up 50 percent since I took office. Missourians expect lower costs because of this commitment.”

The cost of the MOST plan has been slashed by 44 percent, which results in a savings of $18.5 million over the next five years for investors, he said.

The savings are the result of a new five-year management agreement with Upromise Investments.

The plan will also offer $500,000 in financial assistance.

Although the prices of MOST have been slashed, Missourians will still have choices in their investment options, Zweifel stressed. Direct-sold MOST will have 17 investment options and advisor-sold MOST will have 21 options.

“We’ve made a good plan even better,” Zweifel said. “It’s another sign for Missouri that in a global economy, we can be proud.”
