Walgreens, 5400 Independence Ave., is hoping to add another line of items to its store: alcohol.

Walgreens Manager Michael Johnson said similar stores like CVS Pharmacy, Wal-Mart and Target already offer alcohol.

To keep up with the competition, Walgreens decided it was time to aim for a liquor license, he said.

Other Walgreens markets already offer alcohol, Johnson said, and the Kansas City market is trying to do the same.

Last year, Kansas City Walgreens stores applied for liquor licenses, but many were turned down.

This year, the stores are applying again and hoping the city will change its mind. Approximately six Kansas City Walgreens stores are applying for liquor licenses, he said.

The Walgreens in Northeast is applying for a full liquor by the package with Sunday operation.

To proceed with the license process, Walgreens must obtain consent forms from a majority of the surrounding 40 property owners.

Consent forms are due Jan. 19, 2012.
