Spanish Citizens Academy
The city’s Latino community is invited to a Spanish-language Citizen’s Academy on Wednesday, May 16, at St. Anthony’s Parish (309 Benton Blvd., KCMO), from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Organizations participating include the Mexican Consulate, Guadalupe Center, Kansas City Public Schools, Mattie Rhodes Center, Historic Northeast neighborhoods, Northeast Alliance Together, the NEKC Chamber, Independence Avenue CID, Northeast News, Dos Mundos, KC Hispanic News, and 1340 AM La Grande.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Blue Valley Neighborhood Association meeting
The Blue Valley neighborhood association will meet on Thursday, May 17, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Guadalupe Center (1512 Van Brunt).

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, May 18, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

Food Truck Friday at Union Cemetery
Stop by Union Cemetery (227 E. 28th Terrace) on Friday, May 18 from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. for the next edition of Food Truck Friday. Come enjoy a tasty and affordable lunch in a peaceful downtown park.

Chalk Walk at The Concourse
Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, for this year’s Chalk Walk at The Concourse Fountain (St. John and Benton Blvd.) Join Northeast Arts KC and KC Parks at the 11th annual Chalk Walk. Chalk Walk is a free, family friendly event that will transform the grey concrete sidewalks of The Concourse in Kessler Park into temporary, colorful works of art that kids, parents, amateurs and practicing artists create.

 

Library’s Central Youth Services 10th Anniversary Party
The Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will host a 10th anniversary party for its youth services room on Saturday, May 19, from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. The event will begin with a tour of the library at 12 p.m. followed by a Uke workshop at 1 p.m., a Xiphias Trio Chamber Music Performance at 2 p.m., and story time beginning at 3:30 p.m. Games, crafts, snacks, scavenger hunts and sign-ups for summer reading programs will be ongoing throughout the day.

Stay Strong, Stay Healthy 2
Stay on the road to better health at the Northeast Library on Monday, May 21 with Stay Strong Stay Healthy Level 2, an eight-week strength training program offered by MU Extension. This second level of strength training runs through June 13th, meeting every Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Northeast Branch of the Kansas City Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd.). Story time at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for story time. Join the library every Tuesday for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. The library encourages patrons to talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special because parking is free!

 

Northeast Library – online scams and internet privacy
Stop by the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, May 22 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for a program about the online safety of your personal identification. Are you sure you’re not falling for dark internet trickery? Having an online presence and doing online transactions is becoming common and increasingly required. But, let the library is ready to show patrons a few tricks to make sure you are not vulnerable to digital security threats and scams.
