Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Tech Coach Drop-in at Northeast Library
Stop by the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Thursday, May 10 from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. to speak with a technology coach. The coaches will help with whatever technology questions you have–from building a resume to building a website. No appointment necessary; patrons can use library computers or bring in their own device.

Chair Fitness
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, May 11, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. This class is designed to offer a total body workout. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

 

KCMO 311 – submit a request for service
The North-East Public Library Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) invites the public to come in and learn about the City of Kansas City, Missouri’s 311 system on Friday, May 11, from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. Using a computer and internet, you can very easily report problems like potholes, broken street lights, abused/neglected animals, litter in your neighborhood, and more! You can even report things anonymously. Join the library to learn the many different ways to submit a ticket and follow the updates as the City receives your request and addresses your issue. An evening with Tracy K. Smith
Head to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Friday, May 11 beginning at 6 p.m. to spend an evening with poet Tracy K. Smith. On the heels of the release of her latest book, Wade in the Water, Smith visits the Library to discuss her life and poetry and read from her works. Director of the creative writing program at Princeton University, she also is the author of a memoir, Ordinary Light, and three previous books of poetry including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Life on Mars.

 

Saturday, May 12

Dig Day
Every year, Kansas City Parks and Recreation and the Heart of America Boy Scouts of America celebrate Mother’s Day weekend by planting flower beds throughout Kansas City. Scouts and KC Parks employees will be planting more than 100 of the city’s community flower beds on Mother’s Day weekend to help beautify the city for spring.

Harmony Project KC plays the Gem Theater
Students from Harmony Project KC – who operate out of the Northeast Community Center (544 Wabash) – will host its Spring Recital at the Gem Theater on Saturday, May 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Over 100 young musicians will be showing off the skills they have learned during the past semester.

 

Monday, May 14

Yoga on the Rooftop
Practice your yoga techniques on the rooftop of the Central Public Library branch on Monday, May 14, from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. The Library resumes its monthly series of open-air yoga sessions led by Lauren Leduc of Kansas City’s Karma Tribe Yoga, voted by readers of The Pitch as the city’s best yoga studio of 2017. The one-hour class is suitable for all skill levels. Participants are asked to bring their own mats and water. Wind down afterward by browsing for a book or taking in the Central Library sights. Classes continue the second Monday of every month through October.

Story time at Central Library
Come out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Tuesday, May 15 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for story time. Join the library every Tuesday for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. The library encourages patrons to talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special because parking is free!

Chalk Walk at The Concourse
Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, for this year’s Chalk Walk at The Concourse Fountain (St. John and Benton Blvd.) Join Northeast Arts KC and KC Parks at the 11th annual Chalk Walk. Chalk Walk is a free, family friendly event that will transform the grey concrete sidewalks of The Concourse in Kessler Park into temporary, colorful works of art that kids, parents, amateurs and practicing artists create.
