Valentine’s Day Papermaking

Northeast’s Rebecca Koop, owner of Backdoor Pottery, will host a papermaking workshop centered around a Valentine’s Day theme at her shop, 3922 St. John Ave. Learn the ancient methods of papermaking using everyday materials. Please bring dryer lint, glitter, ribbon, and other materials you’d like to incorporate into your one-of-a-kind papers. Papermaking tools will be provided. Community Development Workshop

The Community Capital Fund is partnering with Communities Creating Opportunities and the Greater Kansas City Local Initiatives Support Corporation to offer a free Community Development Workshop. The workshop will bring together neighborhood associations, non-profits, public agencies, residents and other stakeholders that live and work in historically under-invested and under-resourced communities in Kansas City, Mo. Workshop participants will be able to network with people doing similar work, share insights on how to best address issues and opportunities in the area, and connect to critical resources. In addition, keynote speaker Rodrigo Davies will discuss the role of crowdfunding in civic engagement and civic projects. Vietnamese New Year Celebration

Pho Hoa Noodle Soup will host a Vietnamese New Year celebration, complete with food specials and special guest Vi Tran, a Broadway actor who’s starred in productions such as M. Butterfly and Miss Saigon. Check out the dragon dance performance at noon and 7 p.m. The event also serves as a fundraiser for orphans in Vietnam.

Story Time and Craft

Join North-East Public Library for its weekly story time and craft at 10:30 a.m. Parents and kids will enjoy stories geared toward toddlers and pre-schoolers. Get ready for songs, tongue twisters and dramatic play.

Cultures Without Borders registration deadline

Today is the registration deadline for artists wishing to enter the Cultures Without Borders exhibit, sponsored by the Northeast Arts KC. Categories include 2D, 3D and mixed media. Interested artists must submit a registration form and non-refundable fee of $40 by Friday, Jan. 31, to be considered for the exhibit. Artwork isn’t due until Feb. 22. MoDOT Public Meetings

The Missouri Department of Transportation will host a series of public meetings to discuss the preferred alternative regarding the The Paseo interchange to the Blue Ridge Cutoff on I-70. In 2013, MoDOT gathered community feedback on the three improvement alternatives under consideration for I-70: No-Build, Geometric Improvements, and Interchange Consolidations. Based on public input and detailed analysis, MoDOT is recommending a Preferred Alternative for the roadway. The first mobile meeting will be held on Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lucile H. Bluford Branch of the Kansas City Public Library 3050 Prospect Ave., KCMO. The next meeting will be held Feb. 6 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Kansas City VA Medical Center, 4801 Linwood Blvd., KCMO. Scarritt Coffee Club Monthly Gathering

Scarritt Renaissance Coffee Club will host its monthly gathering from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 8. Guest of honor is to be announced. Knights of Columbus Monthly Breakfast

Knights of Columbus will host its monthly breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Feb. 9, at St. Anthony’s St. Joseph Hall, 3208 Lexington Ave., Kansas City, Mo. Breakfast will include biscuits and gravy, sausage, pancakes, scrambled eggs, potato casserole, chorizo con huevo and more. Cost is $6.50 for adults and $4 for children ages 4-12.

City of Kansas City Budget Hearings

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will host a series of budget hearings regarding the proposed FY 2014-15 activity budget.
