Thursday, May 25
Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic
The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Public hearing to discuss potential single KCI terminal
The City of Kansas City, Missouri, is considering a proposal from Burns & McDonnell to privately finance a new single terminal at Kansas City International Airport, and residents are being encouraged to join the discussion. To that end, the City has scheduled a public hearing on Thursday, May 25, beginning at 9:15 a.m. on the 26th Floor of City Hall. These hearings will provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about the proposal recently set forth by Burns & McDonnell to use private financing to design and build a single terminal at KCI. The public will also be able to offer feedback directly to the City Council.

Northeast Farmer’s Market returns
The next Northeast Farmer’s Market will be on Thursday, May 25, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 3001 Independence Avenue, at the intersection of Independence and Gladstone Blvd. Items to be included at the market are vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread and more. The weekly market will also feature live music and a dedicated kids activity tent. The market also participates in the Double Up Food Bucks KC program. This allows customers receiving SNAP benefits to double their EBT/SNAP dollars to purchase more fruits and vegetables (up to $25/week). Tech coach drop-ins at North-East Branch
Come out to the Kansas City Public Library’s North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, May 26 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. to get some tips from a local tech coach. Computers will be available, and no appointments are necessary. Tech coaches can answer questions about a variety of subjects, including Microsoft programs, the internet, email, formatting a job resume and applying for employment online, and syncing your smart phone.

Chair Fitness
Kansas City Public Library’s North-East Branch (6000 Wilson Rd.) will host a chair fitness class on Friday, May 26, beginning at 9:30 a.m. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise.

Kansas City Jazz and Heritage Festival begins
Head out to the 18th and Vine District on Memorial Day weekend for the Kansas City Jazz and Heritage Festival. Lalah Hathaway will open the festival on May 26th, at the Paseo Boulevard Main Stage. The Paseo will be closed from Truman Road to 19th Street for the weekend. Grammy Award winners John Scofield and Brandy; MacArthur Fellowship “Genius Grant” awardee Regina Carter; and The Hot Sardines will round out the national headliners for the main stage. The festival also honors Kansas City’s rich heritage in jazz by featuring local musicians and worldwide phenomena Bobby Watson, McFadden Brothers, Kevin Mahogany, and Oleta Adams. Memorial Day Weekend at WWI Museum
The WWI Museum is recognizing veterans and active military personnel on Memorial Day Weekend by offering them free admission. Regular admission is also half-price from Friday, May 26 until Monday, May 29. The Museum offers several events during the course of the weekend for people of all ages and interests, including a free public ceremony at 10 a.m. on Memorial Day featuring renowned photographer Michael St Maur Sheil, whose exhibitions of contemporary photographs of World War I battlefields have been seen by millions of people across the world. Citizenship Prep at Central Branch
Head on out to the Central Branch of the Kansas City Public Library on Saturday, May 27 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Come learn the basic US history information, review USCIS’s 100 Questions, and practice the citizenship exam/interview in this free course. Advanced English skills preferred. All you need is a notebook and a pen.

 

Sunday, May 28
Memorial Day Celebration at the Station
Celebrate Memorial Day one day early this year at Union Station, where the Kansas City Symphony will be celebrating the holiday in style on Sunday, May 28. The event site will open at 3 p.m., and the performance by the Kansas City Symphony will begin at 8 p.m. The 15th annual patriotic concert event is the largest free Memorial Day weekend festival in the Midwest, and this year welcomes singer Patti Austin as the special musical guest and host. The event will recognize the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I, and celebrate the 100th birthday of Ella Fitzgerald with her World War II-era songs that inspired and entertained a nation. Make it an all-day family affair with pre-concert musical acts, food trucks, Lee Jeans Family Zone, the Grantham University Veterans Place with services for veterans, plus activities inside Union Station and the National World War I Museum and Memorial. At dusk, the Kansas City Symphony builds to a grand finale featuring Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” with live cannons and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Blankets and lawn chairs welcome.

Sunday Matinee at North-East Library
The next Sunday Matinee movie day at the North-East Branch of the Kansas City Public Library will be held on Sunday, May 28, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please feel free to join the library for family-friendly screenings of two feature films: Nine Loves and The Eagle Huntress. This movie day is designed for parents with young children; both movies are not rated.

Memorial Day
The Memorial Day holiday will be recognized on Monday, May 29. Most public entities and the Northeast News will be closed. Don’t forget to thank veterans for their service.

 

Tuesday, May 30
Story time at Central Library
Join the Kansas City Public Library’s Central Branch on Tuesday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for stories, songs, and plenty of time for play. Library guests talk, sing, read, write and play every day, but Tuesdays are special. Parking is free!
