KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Phase 2 of renovations at Concourse Park is nearly complete.

The re-surfacing and re-painting of the former tennis courts at the popular Northeast playground are already complete. In lieu of tennis, the new court will be split between basketball hoops and futsal courts – a five-on-five variation of soccer played with smaller goals.

The futsal goals have already been installed, but Kansas City Parks and Recreation Program Manager Scott Overbay noted on Thursday, November 10 that the new courts won’t be available for public use until the rest of the renovations are complete. According to Overbay, remaining tasks include some seeding and completing the fence-work surrounding the courts.

“We’re waiting until the contractor’s done with the fencing until we open it up,” said Overbay. “It’s technically still a work site.”

Primetime Contracting Corporation served as the project’s contractor, having entered the lowest and best bid of $286,230. The scope of work, which is being financed through in-district PIAC funding, included the resurfacing of the existing tennis courts, re-striping the courts for futsal (and basketball), installing the futsal goals, and putting up new ten-foot chain link fencing, posts, and gates surrounding the futsal courts.

While the new courts aren’t yet open to the public, it’s not too early to admire the transition from old to new. For comparison’s sake, check out a photo of the old courts below.
