Banking basics

Stop by the North-East Public Library on Wednesday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m. to participate in a banking basics workshop. You will learn how to select a bank or credit union, balance your checkbook, protect and manage your money, and maximize banking products. All attendees will receive a $30 Library fine reduction coupon, which can be applied toward fines, or lost/damaged fees.

Substance abuse recovery

Central Bank of KC Customer Appreciation Day

Central Bank of Kansas City will host a Customer Appreciation Day on Wednesday, September 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 2301 Independence Blvd. The event will include hot dogs, health screenings conducted by Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center, games and giveaways. Customers can also enter a drawing for free Royals tickets. Central Bank will conduct the drawing at noon on September 21.

Adult Thursday – Wii game

Come in to the North-East Public Library (6000 Wilson Rd) on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. to play Wii games and board games with other adults.

Northeast Farmers’ Market

The Northeast Farmers’ Market (3001 Independence Ave., KCMO 64124) will be open on Thursday, September 22, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. There will be a wide assortment of vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, bread, and coffee.

Mattie Rhodes Center health clinic

The Northeast location of the Mattie Rhodes Center (148 N. Topping) opens its evening health clinic, named La Clinica, every Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. No appointments needed, but care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Artist is in

Northeast artist Darlene Victoria de Lyon will discuss her work at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art on Thursday, September 22, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Her work is mostly colored pencil and pastel drawings. The Museum Store carries her art, which includes drawings printed onto ceramic platters and greeting cards.

“Making a Museum” tour

Enjoy a tour guided by Kansas City Museum Executive Director Anna Marie Tutera on Friday, September 23 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tour the first floor of Corinthian Hall and the first floor of the Carriage House at the Kansas City Museum, and learn about the Museum’s new mission, vision, and renovation planning process. Participate in a conversation and share ideas about the development of future programs, exhibitions, events, and volunteer opportunities.

Chair fitness

Stop by the North-East Library (6000 Wilson Rd.) on Friday, September 23, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for a chair fitness class. No matter what your limitations, you can still reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of exercise. Cardio, strength and flexibility exercises are all performed from a seated position.

Computer Class – Microsoft

Join North-East Public Library for a class on the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, which will focus on templates as well as the various menu options. Class begins at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 6000 Wilson Rd.

New KC Museum exhibit on display now

The exhibit Passing Me By: Snapshots of Northeast, 1996 to 2016 will be displayed at the Kansas City Museum (3218 Gladstone) through October 15. Through film and digital mediums, Bryan Atkinson seeks to present a vibrant portrait of Kansas City’s Historic Northeast community.

American Jazz Museum previews new exhibit

The American Jazz Museum (1616 E. 18th St.) will be previewing a new exhibit entitled A Place for All People: Introducing the National Museum of African American History and Culture on Saturday, September 24. The preview is for a commemorative poster exhibition that celebrates the opening of the Smithsonian’s newest museum. Based on the inaugural exhibitions of the museum, the posters highlight key artifacts that tell the rich and diverse story of the African American experience.

Blue Mass at St. Anthony’s Church

St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (309 Benton Blvd) will celebrate area law enforcement personnel on Sunday, September 25, with a special Mass beginning at 9:00 a.m. The community will have the opportunity to thank law enforcement at a reception to be held in the social hall following Mass. As part of the event, members of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association will tie blue ribbons around trees in the week leading up to the Mass.

KC Parks Board meeting

The next meeting of the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners will be held on Tuesday, September 27, beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Parks Board holds public meetings twice a month on Tuesday at the Parks and Recreation Department headquarters in Swope Park, 4600 E. 63rd St.

Northeast Fall Homes Tour

The Northeast Kansas City Historical Society is proud to announce its fifth annual Fall Homes Tour to be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m on Saturday, October 15, 2016. The first floors of five classic houses will be featured on this year’s tour. The destinations were built in the early 1900s and one is a classic example of adaptive reuse of an old fire station into residential living. All houses have some stairs to gain access into them. Advance tickets may be purchased online for the cost of $12 each. Tickets purchased on October 15th will be $15 each. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. On the day of the Tour, pick up tickets at the Sales Tent at 3241 East Tenth Street, on the southwest corner at Indiana Avenue. Art in the park

Come out to Ilus Davis Park (11th and Oak) on Friday, September 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to enjoy performance art and food trucks. The September performance, entitled Downtown Replay, is a series of public improvisational performances which are later combined and reworked into traditional stage performances.
