KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The Kansas City Public Schools will officially unveil its two new middle schools to the public.

During the ribbon cutting ceremonies on Saturday, Sept. 13, community members will be able to tour the Northeast Middle School, 4909 Independence Ave., and Central Middle School, 3611 E. Linwood Blvd.

Central has the first ribbon cutting from 9 – 9:30 a.m. followed by the Northeast cutting from 1 – 1:30 p.m. Student ambassadors will be on hand at both schools to lead tours following the ribbon cutting ceremonies.

In 2010, seventh and eighth graders were moved to the high schools during the right-sizing process. After Green was named permanent Superintendent two years later, he launched an initiative to restart the middle schools in response to community concerns and best practices within public education. Both schools currently just have seventh graders. The buildings will have their full enrollment of seventh and eighth graders starting in the 2015-2016 school year.

Though both buildings have been in KCPS for decades, they have been extensively renovated and updated to maximize teaching and learning for middle school students and staff. The entire project has been lead by Lead Middle School Principal Dr. Cynthia Johnson. She’s focused her staff on equipping students with 21st Century skills, developing personal relationships with students and parents, and aligning programs with Association for Middle Level Education recommendations.
