Cultures Without Borders registration deadline approaching

Northeast News
January 27, 2014

The deadline is looming for artists to enter the Cultures Without Borders exhibit, sponsored by the Northeast Arts KC. Categories include 2D, 3D and mixed media.

Interested artists must submit a registration form and non-refundable fee of $40 by Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, to be considered for the exhibit. Artwork isn’t due until Feb. 22.

This year’s juror is Jennie Federick, who earned a BFA in fiber from the Kansas City Art Institute, followed by her MFA from Indiana State University. Frederick apprenticed at Twinrocker Handmade Paper and founded Kansas City Paperworks, Inc. in 1983. Federick also taught at several local universities, has been featured in multiple publications and has showcased her work internationally.

To be eligible for the Cultures Without Borders Exhibit, artists must be 18 years old or older, submit original artwork completed within the last three years and artwork must reflect the Cultures Without Borders theme. Works submitted should express the interpretation of your culture.

“Culture is the fineness of feelings, thought, tastes, manners, customs, arts, music, ethnic language and architecture,” the Cultures Without Borders brochure stated. “Kansas City has many ethnic and social cultures living within its borders. Each group ‘carries’ within itself customs, symbols and images of its own uniqueness and distinction from that of other groups.”

Artists are allowed to submit up to three entries. Artists will be notified via mail postmarked Feb. 25 if they have been chosen for the exhibit. The exhibit will run from March 7 to March 29.
