Kansas City joined cities from across the U.S. to host the 28th Annual National Night Out Against Crime Tuesday, Aug. 7. More than 15,500 communities participated.

National Night Out is designed to increase drug and crime prevention awareness, encourage area residents to participate in local crime awareness and prevention initiatives, as well as strengthen the relationship between the police and community.

Kansas City’s free event took place at Swope Park, featuring informational booths from local libraries, Kansas City Police Department and other community organizations. Kansas City’s National Night Out also included a variety of entertainment ranging from gospel singing to dance to poetry.

During the evening, recipients of the city’s 2012 Good Neighbor Award received recognition and a plaque. Six of the recipients live in Historic Northeast and include Rick Jones, Julie Duvall, Rebecca Koop, Kristin Johnson, Christy Maddux and Jessica Ray.

Good Neighbor recipients are those who have “provided a substantial service to the community without compensation and must demonstrate an ongoing spirit of compassion and helpfulness to their neighbors.”
