Kansas City’s Vision Zero program aims to reduce or eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by installing traffic calming measures such as speed bumps and speed tables on residential streets.

July 25, Kansas City City Council legislation approved the installation of 100 new speed bumps in 50 locations city-wide. Within the Historic Northeast, speed bumps were approved on side streets inside the boundaries of Sheffield, Independence Plaza, Lykins and Indian Mound neighborhoods. Each approved block will contain two speed bumps.

District three was approved for a total of 15 locations, with two of those within the Independence Plaza boundaries — the 2600 block of E. Seventh St. and the 2800 block of 11th St.

District four was approved for 15 locations also — with two blocks each in Sheffield, Lykins and Indian Mound neighborhoods.

Those locations were identified as the 1100 block of Newton Ave., and 1200 block of Topping Ave. in Sheffield, the 4600 block of E. Eighth St., and 4800 block of E. Sixth St. in Lykins, and the 400 block of S. Denver Ave. and 400 block of S. White Ave. in Indian Mound.

Requests for speed bumps for these locations were initiated by residents through the City’s 311 system. Installation of approved speed bumps align with the city’s Street Preservation Program to create cost savings of tax dollars by leveraging resurfacing funds.

Signage on each block will inform motorists they are about to encounter a speed bump and to slow down to 15 mph. The speed limit on most residential side streets is 25 mph, but each block rarely has signage to indicate the speed.

Speed tables vary from speed bumps to include safer access for pedestrians to cross the roadway. Speed tables are the same height but wider, painted as a crosswalk, and located at intersections or areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. No speed tables are being installed in Historic Northeast at this time.
