The Northeast News celebrates yet another milestone birthday this month as we turn 21 years-old under the ownership of Michael and Christine Bushnell, “Mr. and Mrs. Publisher” for our purposes here.
After a gala luncheon courtesy of the Northeast Chamber of Commerce on June 25, we turn our attention to our anniversary month and pay homage to the longstanding supporters and partners that make this gig as a community journalist one of the best in the city.
As part of our July 3 edition, The Dog reached out to our pool of former managing editors for some insight on their experiences here at the House of News.
You can read their retrospective piece on page 11 in this week’s Northeast News.
Our initial managing editor and chief designer under our ownership, Norman Mason, passed away in 2001. Many of the features used today in our print and online editions of the Northeast News were the brainchild of our first editor Norm Mason and his trusty sidekick and photo editor Bradley C. Finch.
The weekly “Faces of Northeast” feature was initially launched in 1998 in which different Northeast neighbors were spotlighted every week.
Bunny the Newshound herself owes her very existence to Brad and Norm as she dons her PRESS fedora and weighs in with an award-winning opinion column every week based on current topics.
In the upcoming weeks, we’ll sit down with the handful of long-time advertisers and supporters and get their thoughts on the secret to our longevity, why they’ve trusted the Northeast News with their advertising dollars, and their plans moving forward.
As we move forward toward our goal of establishing a regional community journalism incubator, we will continue to provide the Historic Northeast community with award-winning news stories and features on a variety of media platforms.
Additionally, we’ll strengthen the community partnerships we currently have with the neighborhoods in Historic Northeast, Northeast Chamber of Commerce, the Independence Avenue Community Improvement District, the Kansas City Museum, the Mattie Rhodes Center, and OneKC Radio.
We’ll be broadening our reach through our existing partnerships as well as new partnerships that expand the news-gathering delivery footprint of the Northeast News.
Thanks for a great 21 years, Historic Northeast. We look forward to many more!
