During the holiday season it’s typical to have more trash than expected due to an increase in gift bags, wrapping paper and food for the gift-giving celebrations.

So to accompany the increase, the City of Kansas City, Mo., will delay trash pickup for one day as well as having a “no tag” period on trash bags. Curbside trash and recycling pickup will be delayed for one day on Wednesday, Dec. 25, and Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Residents who have weekly trash pickup on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays these next two weeks will have their trash picked up the following day. For example, a resident who has weekly trash and recycling pickup on Wednesdays will have their disposables collected Thursday, Dec. 26, and Thursday, Jan. 2; Thursday and Friday trash pickups follow suit. Kansas Citians who have trash picked up on Mondays and Tuesdays will not be affected by this temporary schedule.

The “no tag” period for trash pickup means that residents can set out up to 15 bags (or up to 500 pounds) of trash on the curb without tags from Thursday, Dec. 26, through Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Christmas trees can also be disposed of at the City’s Leaf and Brush Drop-off Centers, but remember to take off all ornaments and lights on the tree before dropping off the tree. The 1815 N. Chouteau Trafficway and 11600 N. Main Street drop-off centers are open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 10301 Raytown Road drop-off center is only open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents who drop off their Christmas tree at the Chouteau drop-off center during its other open days will be charged $5 per tree.

These drop-off centers will close for the season Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, and will open in March 2014. The City’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility will close Dec. 24 to 26 and Dec. 31 to Jan. 2.

The City’s 311 Call Center will also be closed Wednesday, Dec. 25, and Wednesday, Jan. 1, in observance of the holidays.
