The Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce invites the community for the ‘Let’s Talk About Art on the Avenue’ event on Monday, June 4 from 6-7 p.m. in Concourse Park.
According to Jenna Wyrick, Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce intern, the event is kickoff for the first Historic Northeast Summer Mural Project. The purpose of the meeting is to get an understanding of how the community wishes to be represented.
“It’s just the first opportunity to figure out what do community members want from this project,” Wyrick said. “What experiences; What stories; what interests should be represented in the art that I am coordinating.”
The event is open to all ages, and to engage the interest of children, Wyrick will provide chalk for them to draw what they love and don’t love about living in Kansas City.
“It’s just to get an understanding of what the kids’ perspectives are, and I’ll talk to them and ask them questions about what they’ve drawn,” Wyrick said. “Then for the adults and teenagers it’s going to be more of a discussion.”
A total of four murals are to be painted throughout the community. Wyrick is in search for four individual artists to plan out each wall.
“One of the murals we want to exist as a map of the Avenue that showcases where the different murals are,” Wyrick said. “ We have some general concepts like diversity, cultural cuisine and food, fashion and design, careers and opportunities.”
Though nothing is set in stone, potential mural locations are already being considered.
“Mayfair Cleaners has a great wall. Giselle’s Bridal also (has) a great wall,” Wyrick said. “The EGG is a great wall and that’s where we wanted to put the map wall.”
As the details of the project come together, Wyrick wants community members to have the opportunity to participate in the painting of the murals, regardless of artistic ability. The June 4 meeting will be held in a tent close to the fountain in the middle of Concourse Park.
