Last week, the city council passed legislation that will, effective May 1, 2014, separate the Kansas City Museum from the Pirates at Union Station.

This newshound for one is a happy camper. The museum will go back to being under the purview of the city, just like it had been since its inception in 1940, until its ill-fated partnership with Union Station in 2001.

While this li’l canine is happy the separation has finally been negotiated, there are still some loose ends that need to be tied up, like the audit of the mil levy originally ordered by City Council member Jan Marcason’s committee last January. Apparently, we as a community are supposed to just blindly accept this merger and forget about that silly mil levy audit because we’re going in a new direction. Not so. That’s taxpayer money, and the citizens of this city have a right to know how it was spent. Isn’t that why the audit was ordered to begin with? To find alleged misappropriations with taxpayer money? But then again, we certainly don’t want you to step on any toes at Union Station, possibly burn some well-connected political bridge that you may need for a future candidacy; oh no, certainly not.

The fact that this audit has languished for more than half a year is frankly disgusting to this li’l newsdog and should be to the citizens of this city, moreover the residents of Historic Northeast where the stately edifice of the museum exists. Attempting to sweep it under the rug won’t make it go away, and this canine is here to make sure it doesn’t.
