Show your support for saving the former Thacher Elementary School, 5008 Independence Ave., Kansas City, Mo., by attending a rally at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22. The rally is being hosted by a Historic Northeast grassroots group called Save Thacher, Save Our Schools. The group is hoping to save the school from demolition.
Particapants will meet on the grounds of the adjacent Children’s Memorial Lutheran Church, 5001 Independence Ave. Speakers will include Crispin Rea, vice-chair of the Kansas City School Board; Rep. Randy Dunn, D-District 23; Marisol Montero, subdistrict three representative of the Kansas City School Board, and other speakers. The rally will conclude with a march to gather in front of Thacher Elementary School.
In a Feb. 5, 2014, Northeast News story, it was reported that the district will most likely demolish the 116-year-old building this summer if the group doesn’t come up with a viable plan by Feb. 26. Also in the story, Kansas City Public School officials said the vacant and fire damaged school would pose a safety risk to incoming middle school students at Northeast Middle School which shares an eight-acre parcel with Thacher.
