The artists of Pendleton Arts Block, 2300 Independence Ave., are hosting Tai Chi for Pendleton Heights residents on Aug. 1 and 15 on the north side of Independence Plaza Park.
Tai Chi is a Chinese exercise that helps increase balance and improve circulation.
The classes will be from 8 to 9 a.m. on both Saturdays, with classes and karate games for children 9:15 to 10 a.m. Children 5 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
The free classes will be taught by Gary Huff of Three Dragons Way School of Chinese Boxing. He has been teaching Tai Chi in Kansas City since 1993, and will be leading Chen Style Tai Chi for voluntary donations from participants.
The organizers are holding the event in an effort to foster community among all residents while supporting mental and physical health in this time of crisis.
They recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes, bringing water in a reusable bottle, and arriving early to choose a spot. They also request wearing a comfortable bandana or mask. Social distance of six to nine feet will be maintained.
Residents of Pendleton Heights are encouraged to invite their neighbors. If the event is successful, a self-defense and martial arts class will be added, along with outdoor exercise equipment.
