Two separate homicides in Historic Northeast neighborhoods marred the long Christmas weekend.
On Friday, December 22, police were called at approximately 7 p.m. to the 400 block of S. Jackson – between the Indian Mound and Scarritt Renaissance neighborhoods – in regards to a shooting. Officers located the victim, Gregory Warrior, near Independence Avenue and Cleveland. He was transported to a local hospital where he later died. A male suspect was taken in to custody at the residence. There is no known motive at this time.
Then on Sunday, December 24 (Christmas Eve), police were called to the 300 block of Garfield on a shooting call in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood at around 6:30 p.m. The victim, a black male in his twenties was transported to a local hospital where he later died. A suspect was taken in to custody near Independence and Garfield shortly after the shooting. On the morning of Tuesday, December 26, the victim was identified by KCPD as 27-year-old KCMO resident Abdi D. Sanweyne.
As of December 26, there had been 148 homicides recorded in Kansas City, Missouri in 2017. For comparison, there were 131 homicides in 2016, 111 in 2015, and just 82 in 2014.
