KANSAS CITY, Missouri — This week marks the first of three upcoming meetings about the Independence Avenue Overlay District.
The first public meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Kansas City University’s Butterworth Alumni Center, 1750 Independence Ave. Kansas City’s Planning Department staff and project consultant inSITE will host the meeting to gather community input and feedback. Parking is available in Parking Lot E on Woodland Avenue.
An overlay district is a set of design and land use standards for a specific urban area. This overlay is located on Independence Avenue between Ewing and Forrest Avenues and will only affect new development, major exterior renovations, and new signs along the avenue. Existing properties will not be affected or required to change because of this overlay district. An overlay district regulates on private property, and does not include the street or sidewalk. This Overlay District is set to replace the old design standards for Independence Avenue.
