Despite warnings from the Kansas City Police Department, hundreds of bullets were fired into the air on New Year’s Eve.

Five homes in Kansas City have bullet holes where gunfire entered walls and windows, fortunately not injuring anyone.

Between 6 p.m. on December 31 to 6 a.m. on January 1, there were 317 calls to 911 reporting gunfire.

During the same time frame, there were over 200 gunfire alerts by the ShotSpotter system, a gunfire detection system that differentiates gunfire from fireworks, explosions, and automobiles backfiring.

The ShotSpotter system covers roughly 3.5 square miles of Kansas City.

The high number of shots from any one incident was 51 rounds fired.

The five homes hit include a home in the 500 block of East Minor Drive, a house in the 8800 block of Crescent Avenue, a home in the 1800 block of Northwest 56th Court, a home in the 3300 block of Wyoming Street, and a house in the 5100 block of Osage Avenue.

Last year, from 6 p.m. Dec. 31, 2018 to 6 a.m. Jan. 1, 2019, KCPD received 301 calls to 911 reporting the sound of gunshots citywide and the ShotSpotter system recorded 109 alerts during the same period.
