At this month’s Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Luncheon, Gregory Stribling, the capital projects manager for KCU (Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences), gave an update on the new Center for Medical Education and Innovation building currently under construction.
The four-story, 56,000-square-foot facility is anticipated to open in March of 2020.

The space will hold state-of-the-art equipment for students, including educational classrooms, laboratories, patient simulations and operating rooms, and standardized patient operating rooms.

It will also offer a third-floor terrace, a garden on the ground level, and a new quad and promenade.

The building is also achieving LEED Silver, an internationally recognized green building certification system designed by the U.S. Green Building Council.

This provides third-party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving various metrics: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emission reductions, improved indoor environmental quality, and responsible stewardship of other resources.

A two-story parking garage will also be constructed to hold an additional 120 spaces for parking.

The building will allow the University to offer advanced equipment for students as well as accommodate the growing enrollment numbers.

“For the community, it becomes a cornerstone,” said Stribling. “There is a certain pride that comes with that.”
