Special to Northeast News
February 4, 2013
Among the many holiday adoption programs in the Kansas City, Mo., public schools is one at Northeast High School.
The NE Elves (NE Alumni Santa Shoppers) project is three years old. Alumni members from all over the country contributed to the success of the 2012 program. Classes challenged their class members to donate an amount related to their year of graduation. Association Elves spent days shopping and wrapping, and in the students excitement, they took a minimal time to unwrap, much to the pleasure of the alumni in attendance!
The Northeast High School Alumni Association funds programs at the school year-round. In addition to the Elves project, the alumni association also provides annual scholarships to seniors. They support academic programs for sophomores and juniors as well as sports programs, the yearbook, music and arts projects as well as other projects related to high school.
The alumni association maintains an alumni room within the school not only to promote education, but to maintain records of the school. The association has an active membership that raises funds through membership dues, a golf tournament, Texas Hold ‘Ems, Bunko and an all-school dinner dance. Viking weekend for 2013 will be June 21-22.
The Northeast building will celebrate its 100th year of completion and will graduate its 100th class in 2014. Initial plans are in the making for a worthy celebration. Northeast is the only school in the KCMO school district to reach 100 years in its original location and in the original building. The alumni association will be working with community, students and administration to truly celebrate the school’s accomplishment. The alumni association maintains a website, www.northeastvikings.org and a Facebook page.
