And the naming blunder continues. Last week, this lil dog railed against the naming of the city’s new East Patrol Division Station and Crime Lab Campus for the late Leon Jordan. This week, the full City Council will hear the misguided proposal and, more than likely, give unanimous approval to the measure, setting a bad precedent city-wide for the naming of police buildings.
Nevermind that the new East Patrol Station should more aptly be named Center Patrol for its almost co-mingled location with that patrol bureau’s building. That said, naming the new facility is an emotional and political based plea by the Freedom Inc. crowd for corporate naming rights of the city’s police department. Trust this news dog when we say this is just the beginning. If this get aproved, what’s next? The Councilman Russ Johnson Mensa Library and Sewage Treatment Facility? The Michael Brooks Massage Parlor and Violence Intervention Center? The Bunny the Newshound wing at the Center for Canine Social Justice?
Give this a rest already. East Patrol is East Patrol. Center is Center, Metro is Metro and so on and so forth. This idea, like so many other council actions is just bad politics. Sadly though, it won’t stop Committee Chair Russ “Mensa Boy” Johnson from pulling it from this week’s calendar and tossing it on the scrap-heap.
