Kansas City shoppers will see the return of Missouri’s annual tax-free weekend starting Aug. 7, 2020 in Jackson, Clay, Platte and Cass counties, and most area municipalities.

The holiday kicks off at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and runs through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9. Missouri state sales tax, 4.225%, and city tax, 3.25%, will be suspended during this time.

The sales tax exemption is limited to clothing, school supplies, computer software, personal computers, computer peripheral devices and graphing calculators.

Qualifying items have price limits, which can be found here, and can only be purchased for personal use. However, for teachers buying classroom supplies with their own money, the exemption applies.

Shoppers do not need to be Missouri residents to take advantage of the tax-free weekend.

Usually taken advantage of for back-to-school shopping, this year may look a little different as schools make plans to reopen, including online learning.

Some tax jurisdictions are not participating in the sales tax holiday, but in those areas the state’s portion of the tax will remain exempt.

Online purchases will also qualify for tax exemption, provided consumers pay in full during the weekend, although they can be delivered at a later date. Shoppers who have qualified items on layaway and make the final payment this weekend will be exempt from sales tax.
