A Jackson County jury convicted Umar Muhammad, 32, on Aug. 1 of second degree murder in connection with the May 19, 2011, killing of Mohamed Hussein.
According to court documents, Muhammad was involved in an altercation with Hussein a few days prior. Witnesses told police that Muhammad arrived at the park at Independence and Brooklyn in a black Honda and began walking toward the victim. Witnesses then indicated they heard shots and saw Hussein fall to the sidewalk and Muhammad flee the scene on foot.
The jury has recommended a sentence of 30 years in prison for the second degree murder conviction. The jury recommended 15 years on a second shooting, an assault that occurred at the same time that Hussein was killed near Brooklyn and Independence avenues, and 10 and five years on two related armed criminal action charges.
A judge will set the sentence in October.
