Leo D. Smith, 95, died Dec. 6, 2009, at his home in Historic Northeast Kansas City, Mo.
Leo was born in Hartman, Ark., to William and Rosa Smith. He served as a sergeant in General George S. Patton’s Third Army during World War II and saw five major battles. After the war, he moved to Kansas City with his new bride, Luci Coats Smith. He retired from General Motors Fairfax after 30 years of service in 1976. Retirement suited him well. He loved being able to dedicate his time to his family and the occasional fishing trip. He also cultivated a beautiful garden that flourished every summer with ripe red tomatoes and roses.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Luci; daughter, Rosan; and his grandson, Justin. He is survived by his daughter, Dana Bruegging, and his grandson, Matt Bruegging, of Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Smith was buried with full military honors in Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City, Mo.
