Kansas City Public Schools’ Interim Superintendent Dr. Stephen Green no longer holds an interim title. During a Monday press conference, KCPS officials announced that the board of education unanimously voted to hire Green as the official superintendent of schools.
Green signed a two-year contract, which pays $250,000 per year and includes the option of two one-year extensions.
Since September of 2011, Green has served as interim superintendent for KCPS. During his tenure he worked aggressively to improve student achievement and operations, launching several initiatives including a dropout recovery effort; an increased emphasis on school leader autonomy; a re-focused state assessment preparatory program; and continued a successive string of balanced budgets. Green and his administration have also re-engaged state education officials, forming a partnership that has resulted in KCPS closing the gap on its immediate goal of re-accreditation.
Before joining KCPS, Green served as president and chief executive officer of Kauffman Scholars, Inc., a comprehensive academic enrichment and scholarship program for students in both Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan. His leadership experience also includes a stint as superintendent of Community School District No. 28 and a Local Instructional Superintendent in Region 3 for the New York City Board of Education. Green has also served as the president and executive director of the non-profit New Jersey Teaching and Learning Collaborative, and was the national executive director of the CollegeEd Program for the College Board.
