Kansas City Public Schools is now accepting formal proposals for the reuse of Northeast Middle School and Thacher Elementary School.
KCPS shuttered both schools as part of the district’s right-sizing initiative to pool district resources and balance the budget.
Northeast Middle, 4904 Independence Ave., shares an 8-acre parcel with Thacher, 5008 Independence Ave. While Northeast Middle is in relatively good condition, Thacher suffered from extensive vandalism and a fire.
Originally built in 1900 with a second addition built in 1914, Thacher spans 34,100 square feet and stands three stories tall. It features a Second Renaissance Revival architecture style.
Northeast Middle, a Classical Revival building, was originally built in 1925 and spans 175,010 square feet. The four-story building also features an auditorium, two gymnasiums and a swimming pool. While the heating system is intact, the central air conditioning has been vandalized and no longer functions.
KCPS will host another public tour of Northeast Middle on Thursday, March 15, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on Thursday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Due to fire damage, Thacher will not be included in the tours.
Both sites are available for sale or lease through Block Real Estate and reuse proposals are due April 30, 2012. KCPS will evaluate the proposals and qualified parties will be asked to present their proposals during a local stakeholder meeting.
