BREAKING— The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) responded to a vacant building fire at 2:15 a.m. this morning, Dec. 24 within the 1300 block of Independence Avenue, according to a release from KCFD Battalion Chief and Media Relations Officer, Michael Hopkins.
It was confirmed that this was a vacant structure and additionally had faced previous fire damage. Defensive operations were used to extinguish the flames, Hopkins said in a release, Tuesday.
One unhoused individual was present at the scene and experienced related injuries. They were transported to a local hospital; Further information — including the individual’s current condition — is unknown at this time.
A dangerous buildings report was filed for this structure following the incident. This case is currently under investigation including what may have led to the cause of the fire, Hopkins stated.
