KANSAS CITY, Missouri – If you plan to drop your pet off at the shelter, you’ll soon have to make an appointment.

Beginning April 1, 2014, in order to provide better service to its guests, the Kansas City, Mo., animal shelter – located at 7351 NW. 87th Terrace and 4400 Raytown Road – will require people relinquishing pets to first make an appointment. In a press release, Brent Toellner, president of the KC Pet Project, said scheduling appointments is the best way to handle the increased traffic the shelters have recently received.

“Managing intake through appointments will help us lower wait times and avoid potential public safety issues in a way that the current system does not,” Toellner said.

The new system will also allow staff to work with residents in finding alternatives to giving up a pet. Such alternatives include helping pet owners find resources for food and shelter, offering pet owners the opportunity to work with staff on behavior issues and providing quick and humane euthanasia services for terminally ill pets.
