The Kansas City Fire Department responded to an apartment fire in the 300 block of Gladstone Blvd at 5:30 a.m. Oct. 15.
Fire crews encountered heavy flames and smoke on the first floor of the four-story apartment building.
Thick smoke trapped occupants and prompted immediate rescue operations. KCFD executed five rescues from the second, third, and fourth floors.
Crews transported four residents for smoke inhalation evaluation, and all were reported in stable condition. No other injuries occurred.
Crews contained the fire to a single apartment on the building’s south side, although smoke damage affected other areas.
KCFD reported the fire as accidental. Investigators traced the fire to an electric baseboard heater but could not determine whether an electrical malfunction caused the incident or if radiant heat ignited nearby flammable items.
The fire was isolated to a first-floor unit on the south side of the building (Photo by Emily Wheeler).
