KANSAS CITY, Missouri —Kansas City, Mo., residents can now help protect themselves, and their property, from fire by requesting a free smoke detector as part of a smoke detector program managed by the Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD). According to a press release from the department, the smoke detectors are available to Kansas City residents as part of a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the amount of $150,000.
This grant allows the KCFD to provide 5,000 lithium ion battery powered smoke detectors to residents this year. Fire Marshall Floyd Peoples said in the release that a working smoke detector doubles the likelihood residents can escape a fire.
“In addition, these detectors come with a 10-year lithium ion battery which means that residents will not have to worry about their detector’s batteries being dead in the event of a fire or changing them during the lifetime of these detectors,” Peoples said.
The smoke detectors are available to all residents, free of charge, by visiting any Kansas City, Mo., Fire Station. The smoke detector program is intended to provide reliable smoke detectors to homeowners; Renters must get smoke detectors from the landlord managing the rental property. City ordinance requires landlords to purchase and install working smoke detectors in all rental properties.
