If you notice several fire trucks along St. John Avenue or in the Indian Mound neighborhood tomorrow (Jan. 16), don’t be alarmed.

The Kansas City Fire Department, along with the American Red Cross, will be canvassing a two to three block area of Indian Mound to educate residents about the importance of fire safety.

KCFD Chief Fire Marshall Floyd Peoples said the two entities are canvassing the neighborhood in response to the house fire fatality that occurred next door to Northeast News on Jan 4. The home contained two smoke alarms, but neither of them contained batteries. Anytime there’s a fatality fire, KCFD tries to canvass the area neighborhood, he said.

Beginning at 11 a.m. Jan. 16, KCFD and American Red Cross officials will be placing informational packets on front doors which will explain how to receive a free smoke alarm, the importance of residents creating escape drills, proper usage of space heaters and more.
