Keith J. Hernandez, a 22-year-old white male, faces multiple felony counts in connection with the December 4, 2020, fatal shooting of 25-year-old Devonta Dunson in Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced today.

Hernandez faces Murder 2nd Degree, Armed Criminal Action, Knowingly Burning and Tampering with Physical Evidence.

On December 4, at 2:15 p.m., the Kansas City Police Department was called to the scene on a report of a dead body. The caller reported that a body was discovered inside a burned vehicle.

Detectives responded to the scene and observed the deceased, who was also burned, lying on the rear floorboard of a blue Ford. Around 6 a.m. that morning, the Kansas City Fire Department had extinguished the vehicle fire, but a body had not been reported.

According to court records, the victim was shot twice while sitting in his vehicle, and the shooting was captured on surveillance video.

Both the defendant and victim were in the vehicle at the time of at least the first shot.

Detectives canvassed the area and located several home security cameras. A person on foot is seen next to the driver’s side of the vehicle when it erupts into flames. They tracked this person on various security cameras, and with help from the victim’s family, connected the suspect to a house on Oakley through Facebook.

The shooting occurred in front of the Hernandez’s residence. Shortly after the shooting, the defendant entered the residence and told his girlfriend that the victim got what he deserved. Blood was apparent on the defendant’s clothing, a witness told police.

The defendant then moved the victim’s vehicle to where it was found by police at 10th Street and Winner Road and set it on fire with the victim’s body inside.

He then went to New Mexico and changed his phone.

Hernandez was recently taken into custody. Prosecutors requested a $250,000 cash bond.
