If it didn’t get hot enough last week, another heat wave is expected to hit Kansas City today and last throughout next week.
Temperatures are expected to stay above 95 degrees from today on and continue climbing higher into next week.
Heat related deaths are up to 9 in the Kansas City area, but there are ways to prevent from overheating.
To prevent overheating, wear one layer of lightweight and light colored clothing, drink water, limit outdoor activity and stop what you’re doing if you begin to feel too hot.
YMCA’s that have pools will open their pools to the public when a heat advisory is put out. To partake, bring an ID. Pools are expected to be open starting tomorrow from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
While an Excessive Heat Warning from the National Weather Service is in effect, all eight Salvation Army community centers in the Kansas City metro area will be designated as community “Cooling Shelters.” Cold drinks and light snacks will be provided to those who are trying to stay cool.
Those in need or with medical conditions can receive fans and air conditioners through The Salvation Army’s Fan Club. For more information on the Fan Club program, call (816) 756-2769.
An excessive heat warning is currently in effect from Friday morning, July 15, to Tuesday evening, July 19. Temperatures will continue to rise in the upper 90s and heat indexes are expected to range from 105 to 110 degrees or higher throughout next week.
