After a 30-year run at Independence Boulevard and Chestnut Avenue, Boulevard Bakery & Pastries will bake its last donut and fry its last pie on August 14, 2021. According to partner Mary Clark, it’s time to hang up the apron.
Boulevard Bakery was launched in September 1991 by Clark and business partner Loretta Peeler. Over the years they have baked millions of cookies, and produced thousands of custom cakes for clients all over the Kansas City area who traveled to the Historic Northeast Community from as far as South Overland Park, Kan., because of the quality and the service.
“It’s not like I don’t love what I do,” Clark said. “I’m like a kid in a candy store. It’s just the right time.”
Another factor is a pending change in building ownership that may create an uncertain future for the business.
The highlight over the last 30 years? “The customers,” said longtime employee Veronica “Ronnie” Scott.
“We got rid of all the bad ones a long time ago,” Scott laughed. “We have people who have our personal phone numbers and will call if they need anything. They really are family.”
Ana and Andrea Zavala’s reaction to the announcement encapsulates most everyone’s feelings on the closure.
“We’re so sad, that’s why we’re here,” Andrea said, and Ana agreed. “We’re bringing the kids tomorrow, we’re coming every day ‘til they close.”
After 30 years of rising at 11 p.m. to be in the bakery by 1 a.m., Clark is looking for a welcome break.
“I’m going to take some time off, give my body time to mend,” Clark said. “It’s been a great run and we truly appreciate the community’s undying support over the years.”
