UPDATE: The victim in this case has been identified as 24-year old Taahir S. Whaley of Kansas City, Missouri.

Sunday afternoon just past noon, Kansas City MO Police officers responded to Independence Avenue and Kansington on a reported hit and run accident involving two vehicles and a pedestrian.

The initial investigation revealed that a maroon GMC Terrain was traveling westbound on Independence Avenue and turning left onto Kensington Avenue.
A silver Chevy Malibu, traveling eastbound at a very high rate of speed, crashed into the right side of the GMC. The impact forced the GMC off the roadway, where it struck a pedestrian on the southeast corner of the intersection and a wooden utility pole, shearing it in half. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the GMC was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and passenger(s) in the silver Chevy fled the scene on foot, in an unknown direction. This is Fatality 91 compared to 79 last year.
