Kansas City singers and dancers — many of them from Historic Northeast — will soon be getting groovy for charity.
“Disco Fever,” an event benefiting the Fox 4 Love Fund For Children, will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Finnegan’s Hall, 503 E. 18th Ave., North Kansas City. Northeast’s Phyllis Lamento is producing the charitable variety show.
“I just love doing it,” Lamento said. “It’s for the kids.”
Lamento has produced variety shows benefiting Sons of Columbus, Holy Cross Catholic School and St. Pius X High School over the years and has now done the show benefiting the Love Fund for 11 years in a row.
The event will include entertainment, food, an auction, dancing and more for $15 in advance, $20 at the door. With a disco theme this year, there will be a contest for best 1970s costumes, as well as Northeast native John Cascone dancing on stage as John Travolta’s disco-dancing character Tony Manero from “Saturday Night Fever.”
“It’s a miracle [Cascone volunteered],” Lamento said, “because I couldn’t get anybody to do that. Nobody had the guts.”
Cascone will be one among 30 different singing and dancing acts. Lamento said some of the dances, such as the 70s favorite the Hustle, would also include audience involvement.
Lamento’s goal is to attract 400 guests and exceed last year’s fundraising total of $5,000.
