The University of Missouri Extension, in partnership with the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, will be hosting free nutrition-based cooking classes. MU has successfully implemented the program in the past, but this is the first time they are partnering with the NEKC Chamber of Commerce.

“Our goal is to make the event more convenient for the residents in the Northeast area,“ said Monica Miller, a nutrition associate for the MU Extension Center.
“We serve residents of Clay, Jackson and Platte County, but the program is open to anyone,” Miller continued.
The MU Extension offers a number of free services to Missouri residents.

“We are a land grant institution, therefore we strive to give back to the community by offering higher education programs to those who would not otherwise have that opportunity,“ Miller added.

The Family Nutrition Education Program (FNEP) is funded by the USDA. It offers families education on nutrition, food preparation, and even budgeting. Although the program has been in practice for years, it has recently been upgraded to be more interactive. Additionally, the website has been updated to include testimonials from former participants.

Class dates will take place on March 12th and 19th; April 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th; and the final class will take place on May 7th. Class times are from 3:30 pm-4:30 pm. Those who attend six or more classes will receive a certificate of completion and some take-home rewards to help them live a happier life.

The event will take place at the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, located at 2657 Independence Avenue, Kansas City Missouri, 64124.
