Firefighters were called to a two story apartment building in the 3200 block of Independence Avenue Monday evening at approximately 8:35 on what was initially a two alarm structure fire.
On arrival, the rear of the building was fully involved. Within minutes, two additional alarms were called in bringing extra firefighters and equipment to the scene. One person was rescued from a window when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters took a defensive stance due to the age of the structure and threat of collapse until the fire was brought under control. The neighboring convenience store was evacuated as a precaution due to its close proximity to the burning building.
Crews rescued one person from a window, who was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries have been reported. The building was believed to have been occupied at the time of the blaze.
Fire investigators remained on the scene late into the night investigating a cause for the blaze. Red Cross is assisting three adults.
