KANSAS CITY, Missouri — A Northeast man has been charged for the murder of a man whose body was found this past weekend in Cass County.
According to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker, James N. Rhymer, 31, has been charged with first-degree murder, a class A felony, and armed criminal action.
According to court records, witnesses told police that Rhymer killed David Mendez while he was in the back of a car near the intersection of 12th Street and Ewing Avenue in the Historic Northeast on Friday, Nov. 28. Rhymer then attempted to dispose of the body south of Kansas City in a rural area. Witnesses led police to the body. Later, police initiated an Operation 100 — a term the KCPD use in standoff or hostage situations — near the defendant’s home in the area of 34th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue before Rhymer was taken into custody.
Independence and Kansas City police jointly investigated this case. Prosecutors have requested a bond of $250,000.
