A two car collision on Sunday, September 10, took the lives of a Northeast resident and his daughter. The incident occurred at the intersection of 17th Street and Bennington Avenue as the southbound driver of a black Mazda failed to stop at the posted stop sign, striking the passengers of an eastbound black Toyota Camry. Minh Trung Khuong, 40, and Thahn Thao Tran, 9, were declared deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Mazda was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries and is under ongoing investigation, to include suspected impairment.

Thao was featured in an article published in the January 12, 2022 issue of the Northeast News (“Eagle carving takes flight”) and was pictured with her grandfather, Lu Van Tran, on our front cover.

The driver of the Mazda retained serious injuries and was a minor. The case and charges are being handled by Jackson County Family Court and remains open at this time. These were the 62nd and 63rd traffic fatalities of 2023.

Funeral services were held for both on September 23 at Church of the Holy Martyrs, 7801 Paseo Blvd.
