The Fairy Princess came to grant wishes in Kansas City for the 65th year this week. The annual meet and greet took place December 13 to 17 at the Kansas City Museum’s Historic Garment District (KCM@HGD) exhibition hall.

The event began in 1935 at Kline’s department store. The annual tradition ended with the closing of Kline’s in 1970, but the museum revived it in 1987 and has regularly drawn large crowds to the Historic Northeast during the holidays for visits with the Fairy Princess. Typical sights at the event include a long line and lots of children.

With the Kansas City Museum at Corinthian Hall closed for construction until 2019, the event needed to be moved to another space this year. That’s where the KCM@HGD space comes in. However, due to it being a new location, the team wasn’t sure how well it would adapt to the typical Fairy Princess frenzy. So this time around they made the event available only by purchasing advance tickets associated with a particular time slot.

“I’m glad that everybody is responding well to the new space,” said Recreation Director Paul Gutierrez. “We have generations of grandmas and kiddos coming for 20 years. So I’m really excited and glad that we have a space to continue this KC tradition.”
