Autumn Garrett is the newest addition to the Northeast News Editorial team, serving as an Editorial Assistant. She is a senior at William Chrisman High School in Independence, Mo.
Autumn is the chief editor for “The Envoy,” the William Chrisman student newspaper, where she writes and edits new stories, manages their website, and photographs events. She is also a copy editor for her school’s yearbook, “The Gleam.”
She is pursuing her associate’s degree of arts while she finishes her senior year. Autumn hopes to pursue broadcast journalism in college, and one day, her career.
“I think the radio portion of it just sounds fun and it reaches out to a whole broader part of the community who doesn’t read the paper,” Garrett said.
She plans to attend College of the Ozarks near Branson, Mo.
“Originally, it was because I liked writing,” Garrett said of finding her passion. “Journalism kind of just called to me because I like getting to know different people and their cultures and different meanings behind what people do, especially in our community.”
Someday, she’d like to travel as a journalist and find out what goes on outside of the area where she grew up.
“I’ve thought about leaving Kansas City, but more realistically probably not, I’ll probably end up staying in the area,” Garrett said.
Between her classes, extracurriculars and internship, Garrett finds time to write short stories and read, preferring fantasy books like the Throne of Glass series.
She hopes to continue expanding her “real world” experience as a journalist with the Northeast News and practice on-air journalism through the Northeast Newscast.
“I feel like it’s a great opportunity,” Garrett said. “It’s been really fun and I’ve got to experience a bit more outside of just interviewing random kids and students in my school. So it’s a bit more of a learning opportunity.”
