A new concept destination in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood that is based on a mash-up between KC Bier Company’s outdoor space and North Kansas City’s Iron District may be slated for an early summer opening if organizers can get through the City’s permitting process, specifically the process of securing a liquor by the drink permit.

The Square, LLC provided some insight to the concept that would be named The Reservoir and located in the vacant lot at Lexington and Ord Avenues, across from PH Coffee. The name pays homage to the iconic  water reservoir just to the north in Kessler Park.

Arthur Curiel, one of the principals at parent company The Square, hosted an open house on Saturday, February 17th at the Show Me KC Schools office at 2201 Lexington Ave, immediately to the west of the proposed Reservoir location.

Curiel and his wife moved to downtown Kansas City in 2014 and have called Pendleton Heights home for the last five years. “We love the character, location, and the diversity of people that we get to call our neighbors in Historic Northeast,” Curiel said. “Our inspiration for The Reservoir was two-fold, we wanted to highlight the history of the area and create a space for our family and our neighbors to enjoy.”

The site plan shows a single shipping container retrofitted for food service on the eastern edge of the site. A covered dining terrace surrounded by shade trees and an activity lawn immediately to the west round out the proposed site. The activity lawn would act as a play space for yard games as well as audience seating for live music events.

Long-time Pendleton Heights resident Linda Fleischman liked what she saw.  “I’m excited about the possibilities,” Fleischman said.  “I’m very excited since Arthur is a neighbor, I know he does have the best interests of the neighborhood at heart, and who doesn’t want pizza?” Fleischman added.

Danielle Dispenza with Show Me KC Schools shared Fleischman’s enthusiasm. “I don’t live in the neighborhood but I work in the neighborhood and I am in full support of the project,” Dispenza said.

While the liquor permit application lists closing hours of 1:30 am daily, Curiel stressed that their hours would be far more family friendly, closing at 8 pm on weeknights and 4 pm on weekends. The venue would also act as a live music venue one or two days per week.

“We hope that The Reservoir will be a gathering space to create connections over pizza and a variety of libations in a laid back open air space in the heart of the neighborhood,”  Curiel added.
