Just after four o’clock Thursday afternoon, officers were dispatched to a convenience store at 3500 Independence Avenue.
They were dispatched initially on a shooting call. When they arrived they located two adult male shooting victims at the scene just outside of the store in the parking lot.
One of the victims was unresponsive and the other one was severely injured. EMS was called to the scene to render aid. The unresponsive victim was declared deceased at the scene.
The second victim was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. He was last reported to be in critical condition
Witnesses indicated there was an altercation inside the store between the two victims and multiple other people that led to shots being fired inside the store and the two victims being struck.
Detectives and officers worked throughout the evening, canvassing the area to develop any potential suspect information or suspect vehicle information.
“There was a lot of people here this time of day you know, around the convenience store,” said Sergeant Jake Becchina with KCPD’s Media Unit. “Just regular foot and vehicle traffic here that also is a helpful thing for detectives because they’re very helpful and hopefully somebody or multiple people may have seen or heard something that can give them some information.”
On May 2, police identified the victim as 27-year-old William Jones.
If anybody heard or saw anything and they haven’t talked to detectives, they can remain completely anonymous and call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS. Information leading to an arrest could be a $25,000 reward.
