The semi-annual neighborhood cleanup took place on Saturday, October 13. The event was organized by Northeast Alliance Together. (NEAT)

Community volunteers picked up trash throughout the neighborhood, and helped city staff unload trailers full of trash into compactors located at The Concourse, Budd Park, and the newly added location, Lykins Square Park.

Despite the success of the cleanup, some volunteers voiced frustration upon the revelation that within mere hours of wrapping up their morning of volunteer work in the community, new piles of trash and bulky items were dumped in Kessler Park along Gladstone Boulevard.

Christopher Lowrance, who lives near the Indian Mound park said “This trash wasn’t pulled out of the park. I spent the morning with neighbors cleaning around the Indian Mound. We drove along Gladstone Boulevard several times in a truck during cleanup. There wasn’t anything there when we finished, and there wasn’t anyone else doing any cleanup that I saw.”

Box springs were left along the newly repaired wall north of Indian Mound park, and a trash can located one block east of Indian Mound, in Kessler Park, had numerous black trash bags illegally placed around it.

Illegal dumping continues to be a big challenge throughout the city; one that many in the Northeast community would like to see reduced.

Curbside leaf and brush collection will occur from October 22nd – October 26th and again from November 26th – November 30th. Curbside collection will take place on your regularly-scheduled trash day.
