Wednesday, June 19th -Juneteenth — a celebration of the abolishment of slavery, through General Order No. 3, issued by U.S. Major General Gordon Granger — June 19, 1865. The order informed the people of Texas that all enslaved people were now free. Banks, government offices, Kansas City Public Library branches and US Post offices will be closed in honor of the holiday.

Friday, June 21 – Pop in at the Park, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., at Lykins Square Park, E. Eighth St., and Myrtle Ave. Fun activities and a free book, free meals for kids ages 1 to 18. Held each week through Aug. 16. Sponsored by the Kansas City Public Library.
Friday, June 21 – Summer Solstice Party, 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Pendleton Heights Community Garden, Brooklyn & Minnie Avenues. Celebrate the longest day of the year outdoors with neighbors for a potluck dinner and bonfire. Free, all are welcome.
