To the Editor:
The school district wants to close dozens of facilities, including the James Elementary School at Scarritt Avenue and Topping Street.
One of the reasons given is that the building isn’t in very good shape. How can this be? Only a few years ago the district spent a fortune renovating the original structure and building a soccer field and a new wing. Just last year a Public Infrastructure Advisory Committee program paid for nearly $100,000 in new sidewalks.
The James School, along with nearby Mattie Rhodes Center, is a tremendous asset to Northeast. Closing it would amount to a giant leap backward.
